The following are available at the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina’s Resource Center:

     Curriculum

  • The Present Word – this adult Bible study series for Presbyterian churches, offers a beautiful, colorful, and exciting curriculum that focuses on the biblical story. It is based on the International Sunday School Lessons. Quarterly resources for the following age level: Adult – Spanish & Korean versions available.

  • Covenant People - This is the new PC(USA) curriculum for adults which affirms the need for, and the ability of, adults to make their own individual connection with the Bible story. Each Weave unit contains: A leader's session helps, Participant overview & background, A participant work sheet. Each weave unit has 4 or 5 lessons. (discontinued, but I have a set of this curriculum at the Resource Center)

  • Get Acquainted With Your Bible, by Gary L. Ball-Kilbourne- This adult study has an introduction and seven lessons to help adults get acquainted with the Bible in a short period of time. Leader’s guide and student book included.

  • Seasons of the Spirit – Lectionary based curriculum, integrates faith & life, reproducible activity sheets, Bible based, inclusive. This is a Logos production and can be ordered from the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation, 800-227-2872 www.spiritseasons.com for sample lessons

  • Whose World Is It? Responding to God's Covenant with the Earth, George H. Kehm. Book. This 7-session study explores the nature of God's covenant with the whole created order of which we humans are but one part. It traces the covenant through the stories of creation, Noah's ark, and the promise of sabbatical and jubilee years for the land. A look at covenant from viewpoints of prophets, Jesus, and Paul's follows, and the study concludes with a challenge for all Christians for a deeper understanding of our role as stewards. I5/KEH/w

  • Breaking Bread: The Spiritual Significance of Food, Sara Covin Juengst. Book. A seven chapter book designed to serve as a tool for serious study of the important biblical symbol of bread. CL3/JUE/b

  • Paradoxes For Living: Cultivating Faith in Confusing Times, N. Graham Standish. Book. The author challenges readers to explore paradoxes we find in the Bible (ex. To be strong, we have to be weak). With questions for reflection and discussion after each chapter, this book is ideal for either personal or group study. CL3/STA/p

  • The Meaning of Peace: Biblical Studies, Perry B. Yoder & Willard M. Swartley, eds. The authors have collected and translated ten essays on peace which represent the most significant options and insights produced by German Old and New Testament scholarship over the past 20 years. This could be used as a resource for a study on the meaning of shalom and related terms in the Bible. I11/YOD/m

  • The Wisdom Series: A Bible Survey Curriculum For Adults by Celia M. Hastings. A Worship Approach to education in 52 sessions. Imaginative, clear, it links information with personal experience. This curriculum moves through the Bible in a year.

  • How to Worship As A Presbyterian, Dean W. Chapman. Each of 8 chapters has a brief essay that serves as a backdrop for tasks that are related to topic and a list of duties follows, along with review and discussion questions. This book tells how the person in the pew is to do the "holy work" of worship.

  • Spirit, Gospel, Cultures: Bible Studies on the Acts of the Apostles, 7 sessions that ask how does the gospel of Jesus Christ transform human cultures? How does culture shape our response to the good news of the gospel? How can Christians witness in their own culture?

  • Exodus: Leaving Behind, Moving On- Bible study for Young Adults 20/30 by Barbara K. Mittman. Abingdon Press. Learners will appreciate learning how God is in the midst of those movements (school, work, or relationships), no matter how minor or how transformational. 7 Sessions. B4/MIT/e

  • Christian Healing: Again and Again, Elaine M. Ward. Six sessions that deal with the need for healing, Jesus our healer, Healing and prayer, Healing and hope, The power of love in healing and the healing image of story.

  • Devotion and Discipline: Training for Presbyterian Leaders. Guy Griffith & Ruth Faith Santana-Grace. This study guide includes eight group sessions designed primarily for a one-and-a-half-hour session format, but they could be adapted for classes for shorter duration. This study guide is appropriate for use in an adult Sunday School class or midweek class.

  • Issues:Living with Change – PC(USA) Adult Foundational Curriculum, Short-term study course for adults. Book. ’95,’96. Discusses how our Christian faith relates to the issue of change. 5 sessions with suggestions for leaders.

  • Changing Families, A churchwide study document from the Task Force on Changing Families of the Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy, PC(USA). Congregations are invited to use the 4-session study to stimulate discussion and form feedback responses on the issue of God's purposes for families.

  • Sunday Dinner: The Lord’s Supper and the Christian Life, William Willimon. Book. 10 chapters that seek to demonstrate that the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper are the normal food for Christians. The book can be used in group study. It has an educational guide by John Westerhoff.

  • Troublesome Bible Passages – 23 lessons dealing with some of the more difficult Bible passages. Student book and leader’s guide

  • Celebration of Discipline:The Path to Spiritual Growth, Richard J. Foster, Book and leader’s guide. This revised edition expands on the inward Disciplines of prayer and meditation, the outward Discipline of simplicity, and the corporate Discipline of celebration. Thirteen chapters with study questions and daily scripture readings.

  • Nurturing the Seeds of Spirituality: Families and Congregations Working Together, Ann Reed Held. Book. A Presbyterian Mariner Publication. This workbook explores ways for congregations and families to work together to establish fertile ground for the workings of God’s spirit. Each chapter includes a real-life situation offered for group discussion, as well as suggestions for at-home activities on the given topic. This resource can be used individually or as a weekly Bible study. It can also be adapted for a weekend retreat.

  • Harvest of Righteousness: A Spiritual Discipline of Devotion in the Reformed Tradition, Rebecca Bradburn Langer. Book. Aimed at helping Christians grow in prayer, Bible reading, and personal worship, this beautifully crafted workbook provides a four-week program for individuals and small groups in the practice of daily worship.

  • VIDEO - What's God Up To? Bible Stories Through New Eyes. 6- Session video based program that asks edgy questions of familiar Bible stories, causing them to lose their familiarity so we can consider them anew. Led by Amy-Jill Levine, provocative and popular biblical scholar and author who is a professor at Vanderbilt Divinity, Nashville.

  • VIDEO - The Significance of Suffering, Diogenes Allen. Based on his book The Traces of God in a Frequently Hostile World, Professor Allen provides a thought-provoking examination of ways that suffering can transform us while drawing us closer to God. This four-part series is designed for moderate to advanced adult study and can be used in small groups or for retreats. Study Guide included.

  • VIDEO - Short Course in the Christian Faith with Dr. F. Dale Bruner. This is an 8-session course in which Dr. Bruner speaks to young adults and addresses the Ten Commandments, the Apostle's Creed, the Lord's Prayer and the Sacraments. Each session is about 20 minutes. Discussion questions are provided for each session.

  • VIDEO - America's New Religious Landscape - Religion & Ethics. (60 minutes) The stories, perspectives, voices, and images featured in this video offer an opportunity for conversation about encountering religious differences in our cities and neighborhoods, about appreciating the complexity of new and old immigrant religions, abut understanding the meaning of truth and tolerance and the ties that bind us. It has a 14 page discussion guide. The video could be divided into 6 sessions on each of the religious traditions discussed: Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Hasidic Jews.

  • VIDEO - The Andy Griffith Bible Study series, vol.1 & vol. 2 -This 4-session study has a video of the television episodes with leader guide and student book. Scripture references are given and discussion is encouraged.

  • VIDEO Evangelism and Rebirth in the Gospel of John: A Study of John Chapter 3 &6 with Dr. F. Dale Bruner. These two tapes, 50 minutes each, are presentations from the Presbyterian Church’s Southwest Evangelism Conference in 1996.

  • VIDEO and AUDIO TAPES - Human Sexuality and Christian Community. Princeton Theological Seminary. What does the Bible say about human sexuality, and specifically about homosexuality? 14 seminary professors tackle the topic that Professor Max L. Stackhouse describes as "the most extensive debate on sexuality since the reformers debated celibacy in Rome." Designed for adult study in small groups, this resource package provides a variety of perspectives for reflection and discussion regarding sexuality, homosexuality, and the Christian faith. Included are:

  • VIDEO - THE JESUS I NEVER KNEW, Philip Yancey. Groups can take a probing look at Jesus in this 14 session curriculum with leader’s guide and participant’s book.

  • What's So Amazing About Grace, Philip Yancey. Video curriculum. This curriculum facilitates in gaining a new perspective on the Christian doctrine of grace. It includes a 10-session leader's guide, participant's guide and 120 minute videocassette to be used in the 10 sessions.
     

  • VIDEO - Parables: A New Look at Familiar Stories - This video program offers a vibrant blend of artists, actors, philosophers, Biblical scholars, and expert commentators who offer their unique insights and interpretations on the following four parables: The Good Samaritan, The Talents, The Prodigal Son, The Unjust Servant. The video contains four fifteen minute segments.

  • VIDEO – Whole and Forgiven: A Bible Study Experience with Walter Wink. This video series is designed to involve groups in the study of six Biblical texts about Jesus and healing. It is led by Dr. Walter Wink, Professor of Biblical Interpretation at Auburn Seminary in New York City. The method Walter uses includes a Socratic, questioning approach that empowers people to interpret the text for themselves. It also includes exercises designed to engage the right side of the brain as well as the left, thus involving the whole person in a consideration of the text. The format works best with a time frame of 60 minutes to allow for group discussion. The Biblical texts studied are: The Bent-over Woman, The Compassionate Samaritan, The Woman with the Ointment, The Woman with the Hemorrhage, Blind Bartimaeus, The Man Let Down Through the Roof.

  • VIDEO - Active Parenting Today for Parents of 2 to 12 year olds, by Michael Popkin, Ph.D. There are six two-hour sessions with leader's guide and participant's book. Sessions include: 1) The Active Parent 2) Instilling Courage and Self-Esteem 3) Understanding Your Child 4) Developing Responsibility 5) Winning Cooperation 6) Active Parenting in a Democratic Society

  • VIDEO – It Takes More Than Love, Produced by Lutheran Social Service and is based on the Search Institute Study of over 300,000 youth. 4 session video/print curriculum designed to help parents and communities support the positive development of their children.

  • VIDEO – The Gathering Woman, Dale Lindsay Morgan invites you to go back with her to biblical times and hear anew the stories of our sisters Ruth; Sarah; Mary, the mother of Jesus; the woman at the well; Mary of Bethany; and Mary Magdalene. This is a presentation originally given in 1994 at the PW Gathering in Ames, Iowa. There is a study guide available.

  • VIDEO - The Greening of Faith - 2 videos approximately 30 minutes each. Part I is Theology and Spirituality. Part 2 is Ethics. These presentations provide a balanced and healing perspective in this crucial discussion of faith and the environment.

  • VIDEO - Discovering Everyday Spirituality - This six-part series profiles ordinary people who seek to reclaim and nurture the sacredness that can be found in everyday life.

  • VIDEO - Aging Me…Aging You - The Journey of a Lifefime - 33 minutes. This video and study guide offer for general audiences a glimpse into the journey called "aging", seen as an adventure that begins with birth and goes throughout life. It presents aging realistically, including both the up-side and the down-side of the aging process, and suggests models for ministry with older persons.

Aging Me…Aging You - Exploring the Issues - 46 minutes. This video is designed in five segments for discussions --- ageism, death and dying, care for the care-giver, spirituality and aging, and justice issues. An additional segment entitled "Advocacy" offers two plans to explore ways you and your church can support an ongoing ministry with older adults.

  • Wake Up and Live Your Life!, Real Faith, Real Life Series from Bridge Resources, Heather Christensen. Book. This exciting new Bible Study series is for men and women in their twenties and thirties who would like to explore relevant issues from biblical perspective. Each four to six session study is theme-based and written from the Reformed tradition. This book has sessions on Freedom, Courage, Humility, Delight, Awe and Do You Want to Wake UP? Participants will need books.

  • Personal Resources & Faithfulness to God, Real Faith Real Life Series from Bridge Resources. For men and women in their twenties and thirties who would like to explore relevant issues from a biblical perspective. These five sessions will help participants gain an understanding of their responsibility as Christians to tithe.

  • Let’s Go To The Movies, Edward McNulty. Book. For ages 19-35, it is an exciting new resource featuring thoughtful analysis of films that include an examination of themes, scriptural references, and discussion questions. Films discussed are Good Will Hunting, In and Out, Joseph, Rosewood, The Truman Story.

  • The Ten Commandments, Walter Wangerin, Jr. Video. This video asserts that God's Ten Commandments are as relevant and practical for us today as they were thousands of years ago. It will help viewers re-think and discuss the commandments and how they apply to a daily walk.
