WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO FIGHT HUNGER?
- One in eight people in the world are hungry or acutely undernourished!
- That’s 852 million people (mainly in developing countries) and the number is increasing.
- Six million children die each year—more than 16,000 a day--mostly from hunger-related causes.
- In the U.S. 13 million children are experiencing hunger or the risk of hunger and 23 million low-income people seek help through food assistance programs.
WHAT IS THE PC(USA) DOING TO FIGHT HUNGER?
Our denomination is very active in seeking to address the needs of hungry people. The Presbyterian Hunger Program (PHP) is funded by ongoing
individual, church, and presbytery support through participation in a number of its program offerings. Each year 32% of the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering also goes to the PHP.
The Presbyterian Hunger Program (PHP) consists of five programs areas:
- Hunger Education & Interpretation – based on the Bible, God’s concern for justice and his special love and ministry for the poor, the hungry and the downtrodden.
- Direct Food Relief – works with programs (short-term and long-term) which ensure that food is available to those in need.
- Development Assistance –
supports ownership by the poor, agricultural technology, rural
community development, cooperative economic development, soil
conservation, water resource development, equitable food
distribution, community organization and nutrition education.

- Public Policy Advocacy – supports organizations and coalitions which advocate for public policies that provide food for poor and hungry people and empower their self-development.
- Lifestyle Integrity – encourages families, church groups and institutions to evaluate their own needs and work to be more caring and sharing of the world’s resources.
Nationally funds are allocated to hunger-related projects as follows:
- 50% to international relief and development
- 22% to domestic relief and development
- 10% to public policy advocacy
- 10% to constituency education
- 8% to education and lifestyle integrity
