Journeys of Faith – A Guide
for Confirmation-Commissioning – Published
especially for PC(USA) as part of Presbyterian and Reformed Educational
Ministry. With this resource you can customize your confirmation classes. There
is a model for a six-week program and a model for September- Pentecost Program.
Supplemental Videos for use in Journeys of Faith are:
- Presbyterian Youth: Reaching Out, Reaching In (30 min.) It is recommended during the Faith Review Event.
- Video Helps for Journeys of Faith (71 min.) – The video contains eight short segments. Each is to be viewed separately as part of a particular Learning Activity or Session
- The Growing Edge (20 min.) – explores the experiences and reflections of youth as they worship. This video may be used as a supplement for any of Sessions 4-15 on Worship.
- On Location: Images of Community (16:30 min) – Deals with the Common Life of the Congregation, Mission & Living Responsibly.
- There Are Varieties of Service (14:12 min) – a documentary that shows young people involved in a variety of service activities and explores their questions and concerns.

The Life of a Steward.
- Making Disciples: A New Approach to Confirmation, by William Willimon - With
solid biblical and theological foundations, this flexible 13-session program
will allow both mentor and confirmand to grow as disciples. This program recasts
the pastor's role from one of youth class teacher to that of program leader and
facilitator of an essentially lay-enacted process. The learning activities and
materials are structured so that the entire program will take about 3 months.
The program includes coordinator's guide, mentor's guide, confirmand's journal,
Faith Shapes (card game of Christian symbols) and mentor support video.
- Journey To Discipleship: Confirmation/Commissioning Curriculum for Presbyterian
Church (USA) revised edition, by Harvey G. Throup. This is a 26-session program
that will enable young people to gain a basic understanding of what the church
is all about; to learn some of the highlights of the story of God's people; to
be introduced to Jesus Christ; and to gain an appreciation of some of the
disciplines of the Christian life. This program includes a participant's book
and a teacher's guide. The units of study are:

God's People Live the Faith
Who Am I?, Katherine Paterson. Book. This book with leader’s guide explores with
young people what it means to be a child of God. The following questions are
addressed: Where in the World Is God? What About Me? Where Do I Belong? Who Is
My Neighbor? What Is My Purpose?
Guided Meditations for Youth on Sacramental Life - This book and cassette tape
contain guided meditations on the sacraments and on confirmation and
reconciliation. The leader's guide contains directions for preparing for the
meditations, the meditation scripts, and directions for follow-up after the
mediations. The audio-tape contains high-quality recordings of the meditation
scripts, with a background of original and specially composed music. CE7/ARS/g
The Meaning of Mystery: Baptism and Communion – This video introduces the
Reformed understanding of the sacraments. Leader’s guide included.
God-Views – Video that explores several of our conceptions about God. Is God a
cosmic sheriff, a senile old man, partying pushover, etc? Comes with discussion
guide.
The Big Picture –is one of the tools in the New Catechism Study Kit titled
Belonging to God: A First Catechism. This could be a nine week adventure in
faith as the group or individual work to see the big picture of the Christian
faith and where they fit into the picture.
Can We Talk? Conversations for Faith, with student journal – This study has been
designed as a short-term, high-intensity dive into the Christian faith. Based
upon the confirmation version of the new Study Catechism adopted by the PC(USA),
this book is geared to lead a team of explorers in investigating the bedrock of
the Christian faith. 7 studies are included.
Which Way To God? A Christian Look at World Religions, Thea Nyhoff Leunk. A
10-session study covering Hinduism, Buddism, Judaism, and Islam with leader's
guide and a video made by young people living in America of each of these
faiths.
The Life of Christ: An Adventure in Learning - CD-ROM- Explore the life of
Christ through 40 interactive lessons, complete with hundreds of study helps.
The Bible: What's It All About? An introduction to Scripture for Junior High
Students- Video. Six short video presentations on the following:

The Church's Story: An Interactive History of the Presbyterian Church (USA) -
CD. This CD-ROM takes users through time and around the world to explore
important people and events in the history of Christianity and Presbyterianism.
The Christian Year, video. This video for 4th grade to adult, explains the
seasons of the church year.
Celebrating Sacraments, Joseph Stoutzenberger. Book. CE7/STO/c. This is a
resource written for the Catholic Church by Saint Mary's Press. It is a 300 page
book with 13 Chapters that deal with encountering the sacred, symbols, rituals,
prayer, Jesus and the Church, sacraments in history, baptism, & eucharist.
Stories for the Heart, John R. Bucka. Book. CE21/BUC/s. This book will
re-introduce some important, but familiar stories of the faith. There are 20
sessions each dealing with a story from the Bible. Activity sheets included.
Confirmation Music - Go to maxpages.com/jjana for "Words for Life, Music for
Fun." There is a song for each of the Ten Commandments, The Creed, The Lord's
Prayer, Baptism and Communion.
**Who Are We Presbyterians - This is a video and four-page leaflet that is a
basic introduction or refresher on Presbyterian identity. It reviews the six
Great Ends of the Church and offers a synopsis of the church's history, theology
of mission, governance, funding sources, and priorities. **History and Visions
of Our Church - This is a 6-session study for younger youth. It is part of the
Celebrate curriculum. It focuses on who. what, where, why, and when of the
gathering of historical background of our church. Youth will link stories of
Christians past and present, and begin forming goals for the future of their
church.
